Severe disablement allowance and severe disability premium
What is severe disability premium (SDP)?
A Severe Disability Premium (SDP) is an additional allowance/benefit or amount of financial support that is included in some means-tested benefits to help with the cost of disability in UK. SDP is worth up to £62.45 per week on top of your benefit for single and £124.45 for couple. This can be included with a number of means tested benefits including:
• Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
• Jobseeker's Allowance (income-based),
• Income Support,
• Guaranteed Pension Credit
• Housing Benefit
Severe Disablement Premium also awarded to people in receipt of:
• Attendance Allowance
• Disability Living Allowance (care component middle and top rate)
• Constant Attendance Allowance (with Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit or War Pension)
• Armed Forces Independence Payment
• Personal Independence Payment (daily living component)
• VAT Relief
It should be noted that Severe Disability Premium cannot be included in universal credit.
Qualifying for Severe Disability Premium:
To qualify for Severe Disability Premium (SDP) you must meet these three conditions:
• You must be severely disabled
• You must be treated as ‘living alone
• Nobody receives Carer’s Allowance or gets UC Carer’s Element for looking after you.
