No estamos felices.

¿O simplemente estaba siendo amable?

O:

"Hoy estoy un poco cansada."

Son respuestas pequeñas.

Sinceras.

Hello holos-lotus@holos-lotus community, with this post I continue the series. I don't always have something important to say.
Most days pass without memorable scenes, without sentences worth underlining, and without clear conclusions. Even so, something remains. Not as a lesson or a revelation, but as a thin layer over everyday life.
That is where the idea for this series comes from: Between what happens and what I don't say.

It is not an attempt to explain myself or find meaning in everything. It is a way of observing what usually stays outside the conversation: small gestures, everyday habits, moments that are never announced but are still there.

I write from everyday life, from what can be observed. It does not need to be profound to be real. I am not trying to reach conclusions or leave life lessons behind. I simply record things, like someone noting the weather without judging it.

So there will be no answers and no promises.
Only small scenes, ordinary days, and a voice that observes.

"I'm Fine"

Some answers become so familiar that they come out before we even stop to ask ourselves whether they're true.

A few days ago, I ran into someone I hadn't seen in quite a while.

We greeted each other with that familiar mix of warmth and hurry that so many unexpected encounters have.

After the first few words came the usual question.

"How have you been?"

I didn't have to think about it.

My answer came almost automatically.

"I'm fine... you know, just getting by. And you?"

The conversation continued.

We talked for a couple of minutes.

We said goodbye.

Each of us went on with our day.

Everything happened exactly the way it usually does.

As I kept walking, I realized something.

I wasn't sure I had answered honestly.

But I didn't feel as though I had lied either.

I had simply given the answer everyone expects to hear.

The one that avoids long explanations.

The one that doesn't force the other person to stop.

The one that allows the conversation to remain light.

Then I wondered how many times a day we say those two simple words.

"I'm fine."

We say them on the street.

At work.

In text messages.

Over the phone.

As if they were a password that allows the day to keep moving without opening conversations that neither person may have the time—or the energy—to have.

The strange thing is that many times we don't even know exactly how we are.

We're not happy.

But we're not sad either.

Nothing terrible has happened.

Some days simply feel heavier than others.

Days when we're tired for reasons we can't quite explain.

Days when it's harder to focus.

Days when we feel like we need a break, even if we don't know how to describe why.

How do you fit all of that into a ten-second answer?

Maybe that's why we end up saying we're fine.

Not because it's the whole truth.

But because it's the simplest version of a reality that's much harder to explain.

I also found myself thinking about the person who had asked me the question.

Were they really expecting a different answer?

Or were they simply being polite?

I don't know.

And I think we often do exactly the same thing.

We ask, "How are you?" as part of a greeting.

Not because we don't care about the answer.

But because we've learned that's how conversations are supposed to begin.

Perhaps that's why we're rarely surprised to hear someone reply, "I'm fine."

It's the answer that keeps everything moving.

The one that avoids awkward silences.

The one that lets us continue walking.

I don't think we're always hiding something.

Sometimes we simply can't find the right words.

Other times we don't want to turn a two-minute conversation into something much heavier.

And sometimes we don't even fully understand what we're feeling ourselves.

Since that day, I've been trying to answer that question with a little more attention.

I don't always need to tell the whole story.

But I don't always have to answer automatically either.

Sometimes it's enough to say:

"It's been a difficult week."

Or:

"I'm a little tired today."

They're simple answers.

Honest ones.

And they leave room for the other person to decide whether they want to keep listening.

Maybe "I'm fine" isn't a lie.

Maybe it's simply a way of protecting our time, our emotions, or our energy.

But I also think that, from time to time, it's worth allowing ourselves to give a slightly more truthful answer.

Even if it's only to remind ourselves that behind those two words, there's always a story that no one else can see.

Sometimes "I'm fine" doesn't mean that everything is fine. It simply means that this wasn't the conversation we were ready to have.

With this, the thirty-first chapter comes to an end and I say goodbye. Tell me in the comments what you thought, and if you would like to support it, it will be greatly appreciated.
