How Battles Work in Splinterlands: Rules, Mana & Winning Basics
Every Splinterlands battle begins before any card attacks. Understanding how battles work is the foundation of winning consistently. When a match starts, you are given:
- A mana cap
- A set of available splinters
- One or more rulesets
Mana: Your First Constraint
Mana determines how many and which cards you can play. High-mana cards are powerful but expensive; low-mana cards are flexible but often fragile. Winning players don’t try to use all their strongest cards, they try to use the most efficient combination within the mana limit.
A common beginner mistake is filling the board without purpose. More cards don’t always mean a better team. Sometimes, fewer well-chosen monsters outperform a crowded lineup.
Rulesets: The Game Changer
Rulesets alter how battles behave. Some favor magic attacks, others ban melee or ranged cards, while some reward specific abilities. These rules are not optional—they define the battle. New players often ignore rulesets and lose before the fight begins. Experienced players build teams around rulesets, not against them.
Turn Order & Automation
Once the battle starts, cards attack automatically based on:
- Speed
- Position
- Abilities
- Current status (stunned, poisoned, shielded, etc.)
You can’t intervene mid-battle, so preparation is everything. Winning in Splinterlands is not about reaction, it is about prediction.
I hope this helps you to win your next Splinterlands battle.
