Speed Haste Source Port To Sega 32X Work in Progress Shown
While Sega, and just about every other company that even looked at the 32X, were quick to drop it once it proved a sales disaster, that is not stopping fans supporting it. One such fan, Haroldo Pinheiro on YouTube, is using the source code to create a port of Speed Haste, a 1995 DOS racing game. The version shown in the video below is Version 0.0.7.
Commercial Freeware Finds New Home
Speed Haste featured two types of racing – Formula One and stock cars. Originally seeing release only on PCs in 1995 thanks to WizardWork Group and as “Circuit Racer” in Holland thanks to Multimedia International BV. In 2012, Javier Arevalo Baeza made the C source code available (minus commercial content) as public domain software via GitHub, and now we are seeing that code getting put to work.
This means we could potentially see ports of Speed Haste to other platforms in the future. For now, we are discussing the work in progress for the Sega 32X.
A Work in Progress
When viewing the video above, please keep in mind that this is a very early development work in progress. It is rough, some things don’t work quite right and graphically, there is a lot of room for improvement.
Playing Speed Haste, via RetroArch and a keyboard, was not exactly ideal, as you can see in some sections of the video. I am very interested in seeing how development goes as Speed Haste continues getting updated and worked on.
The Sega 32X is definitely capable of running Speed Haste closer to the DOS original. What is there right now is likely not to be what many would consider interesting. If you follow work in progress games then you know it is about getting the feel, the bones so to speak, right then worry about graphics later. Gameplay is king and other than a few weird effects due to certain button pushes, Speed Haste is well on its way to being a great port.
