Impossible Mission 3 Announced for Commodore 64

If you are old enough to remember Impossible Mission, then you are probably old school. One feature the original had that gamers talked about all the time was the digitized voice at the beginning. Over the years there have been remakes and a sequel, and now a second sequel, coming to the Commodore 64 gaming computer.

Stay awhile, stay forever

The first Impossible Mission was released by Epyx on the Commodore 64 in 1984. You were cast as a secret agent trying to infiltrate the fortress of a mad genius (think James Bond without the license). There were a few innovative ideas here, digitized speech being the one most talked about.

Another innovation was having to search every day office items in your quest. This was unique because it brought a new level of interaction with the levels. In most games, items are either background objects or they are obstructions that you had to destroy or cross somehow.

In Impossible Mission, background objects were interactive features. You had to search desks, computers, filing cabinets, etc for clues.

Updated classic for new gamers on classic hardware

Impossible Mission 3 is an officially licensed release. This is not someone that decided to illegally use the name. Nor is this someone buying a prototype of the unreleased game, then releasing it like they have legal right to.

Gamers can expect quite a few familiar things with Impossible Mission 3. From what I can tell, the classic “search and solve” puzzles are here, so are the robots that patrol levels causing you trouble.

So far, Impossible Mission 3 is coming to the Commodore 64, no word on if other platforms will receive a version.

There is also no word on how Impossible Mission 3 will be released – Disk, cartridge, digital – so that is still in the air.
