Should Voting Be Mandatory?

I seriously don't think that people should be compelled to vote – and by 'compelled' I mean arrested, put on trial and charged with a crime, which is quite a stretch in my opinion.

I'm not saying that voting doesn't matter, it does, but I feel there's a big difference between encouraging people to vote and threatening them with jail time if they don't, the moment you criminalize something as personal as choosing whether or not to participate in an election, you turn a civic duty into a punishment, and that changes the whole spirit of what voting is supposed to be about.

Come on ,think about it, voting should be a matter of the people's will, after all, right? However, if voters come to the polls only because they fear going to court, are they exercising their votes with purpose? Do they simply fill in a ballot to get out of trouble? I think a little forced participation could actually dilute the quality of the votes people are voting on, People might vote on any name, any option, just to say they voted that is not political participation to me, that's compliance from fear..

Now, I do understand the argument behind mandatory voting though, some people believe that if everyone is forced to participate, it forces the government to actually represent everyone, not just the loud, consistent voters ,and honestly, that part makes sense on paper, low voter turnout can mean elections get decided by a small percentage of the population, which is not exactly fair representation either, so I get why some countries have gone this route.

But here is where I stand, I believe the solution is not force, it is education and access, if people genuinely understood how much their vote affects their everyday life, from the price of things in the market to security, to basic infrastructure, they would show up on their own, But most times the problem is not that people don't care, they just feel disconnected, they feel like their vote doesn't make any difference to them, even in places where corruption is deep rooted and where their vote doesn't matter anyway because the result is already determined by the corrupt leaders.

Rather than arresting people because they didn't vote, I believe that there ought to be more effort into making voting easier and more transparent and more trustworthy. When people think that their vote will count, they don't need to be threatened to vote in the polling booth.

So I said at the start that people should always go out to vote, not because the law says they must do so or threatens to have them jailed for not doing so, but because they know the consequences of what is at stake for their own country. When they come together for the purpose, when they come together because they want to, then real change begins to make sense.

At the end of the day, mandatory voting might fill up polling stations, but it will not necessarily fill people's hearts with the kind of civic pride that actually moves a nation forward.
