  1. Get the installer(CD).
  2. Put it into the CD drive.
  3. Put off the system.
  4. Put on the system. Before it boots up completely, open its BIOS(tap f9 or f12. It varies from system to system. Look up yours online).
  5. Use the arrow keys to select install from CD drive.
  6. Then select the installer.(it should appear).
Select 64 or 32 bit ( check if your system is 32 or 64 bit and choose the appropriate) and the type of Windows 8.1 to install.
  7. Then choose if it should upgrade or split partition. Splitting partition means when you boot it, it will ask to pick between Windows 7 and 8.1. You will have both operating systems and upgrading just leaves you with Windows 8.1. Note: if you upgrade, you will be asked to delete all files or keep. If you choose keep, when the upgrade is done, your previous files will be in a folder named Windows.old. You can transfer the files from the folder wherever and also install previous applications.
  8. Some wizards will pop up. Stuff like agreeing to terms and stuff then it upgrades.
  9. Then it asks for activation key. It should be written on the pack of the disk except you are using a cracked version which will bypass it. If you don't have the activation key, check online for activation key. Specify the Windows type being installed.
  10. Wait for it to finish.
  11. Transfer files from the Windows.old folder.
