Should backyard chicken keepers be regulated like commercial farms?
This is my mums hen and her chicks, who inspired this question.
Nothing beats the calming sound of a hen quietly clucking as she looks after her chicks in your backyard. For many people, owning several backyard chickens is the first step in homesteading, as it provides fresh eggs every day, fertiliser for the garden, and a feeling of independence. However, new regulations may be making it more difficult for ordinary citizens to keep chickens. In Great Britain, we have to register all our chickens legally, and it feels like a loss of freedom. I am no longer just a person with a garden but a registered animal keeper.
Rules vary by region, but many local laws cover the placement of coops, the number of chickens, the need for registration, the selling of eggs and disease control. The basis for such legislation is generally understood: to serve and protect animal welfare and public health and to provide good neighbourly relations.
To be honest, taking care of a household coop with six birds is entirely different than looking after a business venture with as many as 50,000 birds. But the fact remains that the government imposes the same rules on small-time bird-keepers as it does on large businesses.
Another factor that should be highlighted is the avian influenza and how to control it. Imposed restrictions on birds by keeping them inside and imposing biosecurity measures are a boon to the poultry industry, but it creates hardships for small scale owners who like to see their birds in their natural environment.
At the same time, appropriate regulations aimed at poultry can ensure that the chickens live in good and healthy conditions. The main challenge is finding the right balance between animal welfare, disease control, and the interests of backyard poultry owners.
Do you have backyard chickens, and what is the regulation in your area, if any?
