From Wild Seedling to Bonsai Brilliance: Nurturing a Conker Tree

The conker tree (horse chestnut) has always been my favorite tree.

In spring, It bears beautiful flowers, pink or white.

Apart from its beautiful flowers, it produces conker nuts and normally fills the ground during fall.

It also has plenty of medicinal benefits; one is conker oil, well-known for effectively treating varicose veins and achy legs.

The conker tree has the most amazing-looking trunk—all conker trees look robust and huge, lush with leaves that turn orangy brown in autumn. Its branches are beautiful in the winter, especially when the full moon shines in the background on them. Just a beautiful tree!

Today, I went to the conker tree nearby and spotted a little seedling under the bushes by the tree, just in time before the ground gets cleared and mowed.

To save this baby tree, I decided to dig it out and try to turn it into a bonsai so I could enjoy a miniature version of this beautiful tree.

Carefully, I dug the seedling out and immediately took it home.

At home, I had a bonsai pot, I filled it with well-draining soil.

I positioned the baby tree in the pot, ensuring it was at the desired angle and depth. I chose not to use wire to shape it as I wanted to maintain the miniature conker tree appearance.
I did not need to trim the seedling's roots as it is still so small, normally removing any long, thick roots encourages a compact root system.

I added more soil on top.

I put some moss to help the soil retain moisture, they will be the baby conker company and they look nice as well.

Now, I only need to water it regularly, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged.

It seems happy.

I placed it where the morning sun shines.

With proper care, fertilizing, pruning, and trimming, I hope it will resemble the version I have in my mind—a mini conker tree bearing mini flowers and conker nuts!
