Can Aldi Bags Really Grow Potatoes? Let's Find Out!
This year, I've been really keen to learn how to grow potatoes after seeing my neighbour grow them in bags. When it was time to harvest, they simply tipped the bags over and loads of beautiful red potatoes came rolling out! 😂 I thought to myself, I'm definitely trying that this year.
I had a few potatoes sitting in the kitchen that had already started sprouting. Instead of throwing them away, I decided to plant them and see what would happen.
I didn't want to buy anything new, so I looked around to see what I already had. I found several sturdy Aldi bags, so I decided to use three of them as improvised grow bags.
First, I poked plenty of drainage holes in the bottom of each bag.
Then I collected some topsoil and mixed it with dry leaves and a little dried grass.
I gave everything a good mix to make the substrate light and airy. Potatoes love loose, breathable soil to encourage plenty of tubers to form.

I filled each bag with about 4 inches of the mixture, then placed my sprouting potatoes on top.
I covered them with more of the substrate.
Then I placed the bags together in one area of the garden.

Just a few weeks later, I was amazed at how quickly they had grown.
The stems had shot up.
And they were desperately in need of earthing up!
So I added as much of my soil mixture as I could fit into each bag, burying the long stems. This encourages the plants to produce more potatoes along the buried portion of the stem.
They looked much happier afterwards.

Today they were even taller, but then I realised my bags aren't tall enough to add any more soil!
I was also pleased to see some flowers. They're such a beautiful colour!
From what I've read, flowering usually means the plants have already started producing new potatoes underground.
I'm going to leave them to keep growing for a while longer and see just how big a harvest I can get using this improvised method.
Do you think this simple setup will produce a good crop of potatoes? We'll find out soon! 🥔😊
Have a lovely day,
