A Placemat for a Kind Soul: Crochet on the Road

I've been all over the place this week and could hardly sit still to stitch, but as usual, I took the chance to create something while we were on our way to Frodsham to visit my lovely father-in-law. He's such a kind man, not the grumpy sort at all, and always deserves a little treat.

Last time we visited, I noticed him folding kitchen towels to stop his plate from sliding around on his tray. So I decided to make him a proper placemat this time around.

I used an excess 3mm cord and an 8mm crochet hook.

I started with a few chains, estimating the width of his tray in my mind. Then I worked rows of single crochet all the way through.

Thankfully, I had brought along some materials, as the traffic crawling past Birmingham was dreadful. Having something to do took my attention off the horrible, crowded road.

What I love about using 3mm cotton cord is that it doesn’t take much effort to get the hook through, especially when travelling.

It’s also sturdy, so the finished piece can last for years, a practical little souvenir.

The traffic dragged on so long that I actually finished the main part just as we finally picked up speed.

I decided to add some detailing.

I reinforced the edges with slip stitches in a different colour yarn.

It gave the placemat a nice contrast and a bit of extra strength. This will also help hold its shape.

I made knots to secure the ends.

Then frilled them in style.

On the other end, I made a loop decorated with knots if he chooses to hang it.

Halfway through the journey, I was done!

I chilled the rest of the journey.

When we arrived, it was just in time for dinner, and the placemat fitted the tray perfectly.

And I gave him a chilli con carne that I had made earlier. I surprised him by slipping the placemat onto his tray before serving.

He was pleased with it, and now he won’t have to fold kitchen towels anymore.
