AFRITUNES WEEK 194 – Joy by Wizkid (Cover)
Hello everyone, I’m Toheer, and I’m really glad to join you all this week doing one of the things I enjoy the most... singing, and especially singing songs that feel close to me: African tunes.
I’ll be performing Joy by Wizkid. My motivation for choosing this song is because it’s a rare blend of a mother’s love and pure motivation.
Many times when it feels like nobody cares or things aren’t going my way, this song reminds me of how eternal a mother’s love is. She never forgets me, and she never gives up on ne, even in tough moments.
This track is one of Wizkid’s early classics at the beginning of his stardom. Even when life wasn’t fully going his way, he still held onto his mum with so much love. And after this song, he only grew stronger, building a successful career and eventually becoming one of Africa’s top musicians and arguably the best.
The song and the story behind it give me shivers, build my hope, and give me confidence. They remind me that as long as I don’t give up on my own career and I keep trying, someday I’ll be able to give my mum the life I’ve always dreamt of for her.
To everyone who relates to this, those whose love for their mothers is unwavering, I pray we all grow into better versions of ourselves so we can give our sweet mothers the love and treatment they truly deserve.
Lyrics of the song
Oh nananana
Eh eh
In the early 90s
That was the beginning
Mama had me
She was definitely smiling
Finally a boy
She was very very happy
She prayed for those with the love of her life eh
She called me grace
She called me blessing
She looked into my eyes
Called me love of her life
I wish i could go back and feel what she felt
But she goes on her knees
And tell God what she felt eh
*When I was a little boy
Mama told me
My boy chase your dreams
And keep believing
And the sky will be your beginning
When I was a little boy
Mama told me
My boy chase your dreams
And keep believing
And your peak will be your beginning
When I was a little boy
Mama told me
Love will set you free
My boy please believe it
Cos this love is for real
When I was a little boy
Mama told me
My boy chase your dreams
And keep believing
And the love will set you free
Yeah yeah
One time for my people wey sabi
Wey dey feel Wizzy music
Wey dey buy my CD
I say two times for the people wey sabi
Wey dey buy all the tickets
Wey dey come for my shows
I say three times for the people wey sabi
Wey dey play my music
Wey dey dance azonto
I say four times for my people wey sabi
Wey dey support Wizzy
Wey dey pray for me
*I say joy nothing but Joy
Every other day you see nothing but joy
I pray God bless you
Bless your family
Wish you what you wish me
God bless my people
Joy nothing but Joy
Every other day you see nothing but joy
I pray God bless you
Bless all your family
Wish you what you wish me
God bless my people
When I was a little boy
Mama told me
My boy chase your dreams
And keep believing
And the sky will be your beginning
When I was a little boy
Mama told me
My boy chase your dreams
And keep believing
And your peak will be your beginning
When I was a little boy
Mama told me
Love will set you free
My boy please believe it
Cos this love is for real
When I was a little boy
Mama told me
My boy chase your dreams
And keep believing
And the love will set you free
Yeah yeah
