What do we know as humility?

The stereotype for proud people are lavish getups, keeping mostly to themselves, anger issues, having a bounce in their step, having their noses in the air, hands in their pocket and only moving with select few friends.

Whereas the stereotype for humble people are simple dressing, walking with intention and slowly too, always outgoing, greeting folks with enthusiasm, always smiling, being very social and volunteering for all kinds of activities.

These things are all wrong ways of knowing proud or humble people, anybody can exhibit anything, anytime, people are malleable and can't just be differentiated by mere appearances that we may have gotten from movies or novels. I have learnt that humility is simply being under authority.

When there is no one you listen to, when there is no one you love and serve, obey and sacrifice for, when there is no one you heed their words, take advice from, you are not humble. Turns out that being an authority to yourself, for yourself and by yourself is a factor of pride. Which means a person can live lavishly, dress so well, keep to themselves and may even be a bit aloof, but they are humble if they are submitted under authority.

Learning this had freed me up from a whole lot of issues, with people telling me I was proud because of some of the stereotypes I listed above. But as I checked my life, I realized that I had all kinds of authorities in my life that I listen to, that I love, that I obey, that will always pull my back and admonish me and I am grateful for them in my life.
