Mounting Shadow Copy Version as a Drive Letter

Today i was having some issues with a employee that did not verify when they were moving files from one drive letter to another. The filenames were too long to restore to any location. Desktop, original location...just would not work.

So if you run into this problem, here is what you can do to remedy the issue and hopefully you find this as convenient as i did.

Locate the Shadow Copy version you are looking for

Right click on the one you want to choose and select Properties

Next to Location, is the path and timestamp you will need. Copy that line.

Now load up Command Prompt and enter the following:
subst X: (paste the line you copied a bit ago here) and press Enter

Now you can navigate to the X drive that is mounted with the Shadow Copy version of that directory. Move what you need to and close Windows Explorer.

In Command Prompt window, enter:
subst X: /D (then hit enter)

You are now dismounted, and have the items you needed. Handy trick i thought.

cheers!
