Treating A Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Infestation - by Sunscape

I have had this Hemlock growing next to the pond for 20+ years. This spring I discovered the undersides of the branches were covered in white, cotton-like sacks. I researched what it could be and of course, the tree was totally infested with these sucking bugs.

After reading what systemic treatment would help to control them, we covered the pond with a sheet of plastic to keep the insecticide out of the water. With gloves, goggles, and a face mask my husband and I sprayed every branch from the top down. Once the undersides and the top of the branches were drenched and stopped dripping, we carefully removed the plastic. It caught a lot of the excess liquid while protecting the pond.

I ordered a soil systemic that has to be applied every spring for a few years. This will help to ensure the tree will have a chance to survive.

The pond during heavy rain which always makes the frogs take cover in the surrounding rocks.

The sparrows have been very busy building new nests this week and claiming the nesting boxes all around the yard.

The largest tower gardens were filled with a fresh soil mix for this summer's plants. Strawberries in one and green bush beans in the second. Those seeds got planted yesterday before the heavy rain came. That's it for today my friends. I have to get out to the greenhouse and work on the hydroponics some more.
