Fertilizing & Cleaning Houseplants - by Sunscape

It was a busy morning since I decided it was a good day to wash all the leaves on my houseplants. Then it was time to give them a boost of balanced fertilizer mixed with rain water I collected this week. I had noticed that some of the plants were showing signs of nutrient lack, so it was time to take care of the problem.

It took me a bit longer than I had anticipated but when I was finished they all looked so refreshed. I cleaned out all the dead leaves and moved them around the room to get more light from the south-facing window.

Many of my plants have grown so big that they kinda take over the space I have them in.

I noticed that one of the main branches on my 15-year-old Thanksgiving Cactus had partially broken due to the weight. It was hanging way down from where it usually is. I ended up cutting it off completely as it had already started wilting from the break.

This is what was left after cutting off the branch. I now only have half the cactus that I had and it was so sad to throw out a lot of it.

I am hoping that the branches I could save will root in the water. I would love to start another whole pot and have two plants after all.

Both of my ferns had a lot of dead fronds in the centers of the plants. It took a bit of time, but I did manage to get them looking fresh once again. The dry air in the house during the winter months can be hard on them. I have to mist them every day to keep them happy until they can go outside in the spring.

This palm is starting to send out new leaves and the older ones are getting very long. It looks pretty sitting on top of the dresser where it gets dappled light. I do have to switch it out with one of the ferns every week to make sure it gets enough sunlight.

As you can see, I move them around the room all winter long to keep all my houseplants very happy.

Now that the job is complete I can focus on starting some seeds for next year's garden. Before you know it winter will be over and I will be moving seeds into the greenhouse in March. Yay!

Until next time, this is Sunscape
