Three Tune Tuesday: Mayer Hawthorne

The other day I mentioned that I am headed to a live show tonight to see the band Tuxedo. So I thought, for Three Tune Tuesday, I'd introduce you to one half of Tuxedo, Mayer Hawthorne.

Mayer was born in 1979 In Michigan and in the early 2000's he moved to LA to pursue a career in music. He was DJing and producing beats for hip hop music. As the story goes, he wanted to use samples of classic soul songs on his record but did not want to pay the royalties for sampling old music so he wrote and recorded (playing all the instruments) his own songs specifically to sample. That's smart!

He made a demo with some beats, sampling his own music for free, and handed that tape to the owner of Stones Throw Records, Peanut Butter Wolf. Wolf told Mayer the beats were trash but the samples were good, where were they from?

When he found out that they were original songs he told Mayer that he should put those out on a record. Five studio albums later he's still going strong, so I'll start off my threetunetuesday@threetunetuesday with his latest single.

Love the old feel of this one.

Next up is a song from his sophomore release, How Do You Do. This one features Snoop Dogg doing some signing, love it!

That's some sexy shit right there.

Last one for this post is a cover of a song I love, the 1972 hit "Work To Do" by The Isley Brothers.

Damn good stuff!

If you want to listen to more here are some links to Mayer's music:

- Apple Music

- Spotify

- Amazon

I just found this video where he explains a bit of where he came from with Daryl Hall, then they perform a song together.
