To the top for the view
The small town of Zemun, which is now basically just a suburb of Belgrade is quite reknowned for its quaint cobblestoned laneways and its abundance of magnificent churches. We had finished browsing the luscious produce at the local farmers market, and now it was time to walk up the steep cobblestoned streets to the top of the hill overlooking the town.
At the top of the hill we came across the Millennium Tower which was built and opened in August 1896 to celebrate a thousand years of Hungarian settlement in the Pannonian plain. From there we had a nice view over the town and of the Danube in the distance. Also, there was a nice view of the baroque style Nikolajevska Orthodox church which was built around 1731.
Once we had absorbed enough of the wonderful view, we made our way down the narrow laneways, past some beautiful old houses and back to the main suare where we enjoyed a coffee before heading back to our hotel in Belgrade. It was a most enjoyable outing.
