Petrovaradin Fortress

On our secong day in Novi Sad we took a walk across the Danube to a fortress in the town of Petrovaradin, which is part of the City of Novi Sad, Serbia. This imposing structure is perched above and on the right bank of the Danube river. The cornerstone of the present-day southern part of the fortress was laid in October 1692.
As we were crossing the bridge over the Danube, we noticed many padlocks that had been affixed to the railings. This seems yo be a worldwide custom for lcouples to show their binding love for each other. Once across the bridge we passed through a small row of houses whose architecture beautifully portrayed older times.
Entering the fortress grounds we were impressed by the grandeur of the place. The stonework was amazing.
At the end of the site, overlooking the Danube, we discovered a clock tower that looked a little strange, as the minute and hour hands on the clock tower were reversed, with the small hand showing minutes, and the big hand showing hours. Apparentlt it was designed like that so that fishermen on the Danube river could see the time from a long distance.
Views from the fortress ov the old buildings below and spanning across the river back to Novi Sad were spectacular. After absorbing all of the beautiful scenery and taking many photographs, we made our way back to town.
