Why you should learn how to build chords
Having a good understanding of chord building is such a useful skill as a musician because it allows you to create different variations of chords right there on the spot, in order to suit your needs for that specific situation.
As guitarists, we may know our G chord, D chord, and C chord positions, but remember, there's not only just one G, C, or D major chord out there. There are a ton, and they are all voiced a little bit differently, each one giving you a different "flavor". But honestly, learning and memorizing them all over the fretboard is not really very easy or practical. So what do you do?
Well, I think the best thing you can do is learn your notes on the fretboard, and then learn the fundamentals of chord building.
Even just knowing how to build any basic major or minor chord is going to give you so many different chord voicing options when you need them.
Don't worry about memorizing hundreds of chord variations for every chord out of a book or on the internet. It's just a lot of extra work and it takes the fun out of playing I think.
Learn what it takes to build a major chord, or a minor chord, and then apply that knowledge to your fretboard and make your own voicings for yourself. Youโll be a much better guitarist and musician for it.
