Josephs BassCam Flashback with Bossa Linda May 2 2023
“Tangerine” Take 2 from Joseph’s Bass View and Bossa Linda on May 2 2023.
LIVE MUSIC with Josephs BassCam.
This is a flashback to 2023 when I performed with a Bossa Nova group known as Bossa Linda.
Music We are probably using, “The Real Book.” A standard text for jazz musicians. It contains many many jazz tunes in a simple formate.
Amp: Mesa Boogie Walkabout. I forgot the specs, but it’s been good for many many years. 300 watt I believe.
Bass: Fender Jazz Bass Deluxe 4 String… also known as “Bread and Butter.” when I was a full-time musician I used this bass for long periods of time. I modified it for longevity. Light strings, heavy mass bridge, low action, grenade launcher, thick strap, and very useful controls (even when broken). Technically it's broken, but I just deal with it. I wan't more mid anyway. I spent a long time carving mid-range out of my bass. Now, I want it.
My musical approach for most of these songs is to emulate a Brazilian drum pattern. The Surdo is the large drum seem in classic samba ensembles. It almost looks like the kick drum on a trap drum set. It’s usually strapped to the player’s neck and they use a large mallet and their hand to make lots of different sounds.
Congas are not Brazilian. I know. However, people like it anyway. It’s common. I’m not one to judge much because I’ve made a pretty penny playing Brazilian music with a Djembe. Anyway, I would guess latin jazz, big band, and practical fun made this acceptable. Also, I am here in SoCal where other musical demands make congas prevalent.
The original bass part would be a depend what super popular version has person been listening to the most. I don’t know it. Again, we are allowed to make up anything we want. Just follow the chord changes and think of the main melody. All the instruments. Standard rhythms exist, but expression or almost anything goes as long as it’s within the style and tempo. Bossa Nova style. Brazilian style.
Make jazz go.
Venu
Same nice ditch at the SACC campus. Seating is far away and the grass is usually swampy.
There are not many places to hide equipment. We can see random gear in some of the video. I hate that. If it was my band…
It’s also windy after 1. It’s a ditch, but the wind still sweeps through.
Thank you for reading and watching.
