THIS GENERATION|| WEEK 126|| RESPECT IS RECIPROCAL||

There's this controversy here in Africa with the word "respect is reciprocal" this statement makes me think, you will see a child you carried, even feed everyday tell you to your face that respect is a reciprocal.

child wakes up in the morning and next thing is popping the question, what are we eating for today without even saying good morning, you return from where you are coming back from and the child wait for you to even come and hug them before they reciprocate pleasantries, the recent experience is what marveled me you went out of your way to do something big for a person instead of appreciating he or she wait for for you to remind them if they have seen what you did and they been like they didn't see you, that you actually don't worth appreciation because respect is reciprocal Children now wait for an adult with all the effort in the world to come lick their foot.

Someone said recently, "If they don't respond to your greeting as an elder, keep greeting them." I am just imagining how my mom will greet me, and I will not respond, and she will keep doing it. But wait, who am I performing or acting for? We are African; we have a good culture that respects, but this generation has twisted everything that I can't comprehend. Do you know a school I taught at? A student beat up a teacher just because she was questioned, and someone will be like, "Why did he even ask the question?" I don't understand what is going on again in our country, a place where juniors will become seniors and seniors will become juniors. This doesn't rule out the fact that seniors should not respect themselves.

Have you not noticed that children of these days are now so rude to their parents, not to talk about strangers that aren't part of their family? People now see it as a norm in our society. On a radio today, one of the podcasters said respect is reciprocal, and the other team members said yes, but the younger ones should dish out the regards first before the elders reciprocate. The man was so concerned when a caller put them through and started calling a politician names. We are supposed to respect our leaders, whether they do well or not.

So this particular attitude in my generation is a shocker to me, and it has been normalized and overlooked by the people up and down here, so it gets me so angry, and I wonder where exactly our country is driving to. My advice is if this norm can be corrected in our homes first, then it won't be difficult outside.
