Minimalist Cafe with a Unique Building Concept

Have you enjoyed your coffee today? Did you make it yourself at home or did you get it from your favorite cafe?

First of all, I’m just curious about how often people do like a cafe-hopping in a month. Are you the type who likes to explore new places, or do you just stay by a particular cafe once you feel comfortable enough? For me, I've done both occasionally. There’s something about visiting the same cafe over and over again because we can feel the familarity, but trying to discover a new atmosphere is also fun, right?

So when I’m in the mood of those two options, I usually choose to explore my go-to coffee shop brand, but in a different area. I’ve written about Jokopi before, but the fact is they have several branches all over my city. So this time I want to share my experience visiting one of their branches that located in East Surabaya.

This Jokopi is located in a fairly bigger area compared to the other one I visit most often. While the one at Ketabang Street doesn’t even have parking lot (they use the side of the main road as a parking spot), this one right here has its own, quite spacious parking area. Every Jokopi branch is always open 24 hours, so this one also provides a 24-hours drive thru option as well.

When you entering the first floor, you’ll find a minimalist interior design dominanted by white color with touches of brown from the wood material that they use. There's a simple bar where your can order a coffee and pastries. I’ve written before, that Jokopi’s simple layout feels like it helps reduce visual clutter, so I find it quite comfortable when I want to focus. This branch seems to be designed with more white color, giving it a clean look. And the combination of brown makes it look neutral and aesthetic.

However, this area is quite small. It is two-level type with a small seating area downstrairs and then there are three tables upstairs. I had originally planned to sit upstairs because the window is facing trees, allowing for a more panoramic view, but unfortunately there were already two other people sitting at each table. I find it little uncomfortable since the spacing of each table seemed quite close one to another. So I went downstairs to find a better spot.

Interestingly, this coffee shop has a quite unique bulding concept. I didn’t capture it, so the photo below is from its google maps. Basically, although the bar area where they take orders is quite small, they do provide another seating area in a different building. Honestly, I don’t even know the exact concept, but perhaps they also wanted to provide an outdoor area, as they’ve placed a few seating around this building as well.

The other building certainly has a similar design. It is also two-level type with plenty of tables and chairs downstairs, and then the same three tables upstairs just like how they arrange the other building. Since the downstairs area seemed a bit dark, I went upstairs. I’m pretty sure I regretted it because there were people who already sitting at one of the tables and the spacing between each table is similar to the one I'd checked earlier😂 my bad.

But they left not too long after that, and I was able to be by myself in that area for a while. Unlike the previous one which has a window, this one is like a semi-open space where we can see the main road and passing vehicles. It’s also surrounded by trees both in the Jokopi area and from the side of the streeet, so it was pretty shady. I moved to the table that has a power outlet and just did some work on my laptop while sipping their signature coffee (which I always ordered with less sugar), and enjoy watching the bustle of the street.
