Is a titanium lined suit a hoax?

Go watch a Bourne movie and you will see him wrapping himself in a reflective material instead of a blanket. Does this work with a wetsuit?

Physics usually defines three types of heat transfer. These are conduction, convection, and radiation. The purpose of the lining is to reflect the energy the body is producing back to the body itself this eliminating the energy loss from radiation. In theory this sounds great but how does this work in reality.

Energy flow is difficult to describe unless you have a background in thermodynamics but let’s make this simple.

The ocean is colder than you are. Heat is a relative term. If given enough time your body and the ocean must equalize at the same temperature. Your body will work hard to keep you warm but it is fighting a loosing battle. That’s where hypothermia kicks in. I’m reality the Beni fits of this lining is minimal because the heat loss to conduction and convection accounts for almost all of the energy loss.

Now this is not to say it doesn’t help, but the benifits of the lining are basically zero when you consider that when you are eating for a wave you are up to your chest in cold ocean water.

Would I spend an extra $200 for this? Not in a million years. Would you?
