Pain Brulé
I have a huge passion for baking, I basically spend all my spare time in the kitchen, but sometimes I get really lazy and spending hours on a single cake suddently becomes the most unappealing thing in the world. Because of this, whenever I'm craving something sweet but I have nothing ready to eat I make myself this very quick and cozy snack (that isn't actually French, I just thought that the name suited it) and today I decided to share it with you!
INGREDIENTS:
-Bread (doesn't matter what kind)
-Butter
-Sugar
-Water
-Cinnamon (optional)
-Fruit (optional)
HOW TO:
First, you need to make the sugar paste. The ratio of sugar per water must be 2:1 in order for the paste to have the right consistency, so for example 2 tbsp sugar mixed with 1 tbsp water (the more slices of bread you use, the more sugar paste you will need). Let the sugar dissolve into the water before using the mixture. Once this is done, put it aside. That's all the preparations you will need.
Choose how many slices of bread you would like to have and put them on a clean surface, then use a spoon to spread the sugar onto one side of the slice. ADVICE: if you want a stronger flavor you can spread the mixture on both sides, but be aware that the bread will become quite sticky and very sweet in the end.
Heat up a non stick pan until very hot, then cut a little butter and make it melt. CAREFUL: if the pan is very hot, the butter will start popping, so be careful not to burn your hands!
Once the butter is completely melted, add the bread (clean side down) and let it fry until it becomes crispy, then carefully flip it on the sugary side. WARNING: if the flame is too strong, the bread will burn. Don't rush it, it will toast either way!
With a spatula, check the side of the bread that's now frying: the sugar does not take much time to be crunchy and it burns easily, so keep an eye on it and take the bread off the heat as soon as you are satisfied with the color of the sugar paste.
When all the slices are toasted and "brulés" you can add cinnamon and fruit slices to cut off the sweetness of this treat, or you can eat them as they are!
ENJOY!
