Genes act as instruction to make specific substances (proteins) which are used for specific structure and physiological purposes in the body. Genetic engineering is an advanced technique in biotechnology in which scientist select and isolate the useful gene form one organism (donor organism)and insert it into another organism (usually bacterium). The organism that contains a foreign gene in its cells is called transgenic organism. The inserted gene produce the desired product (proteins) in transgenic organism.

جین مخصوص مادوں (پروٹینز) کو بنانے کے لیے ہدایات کے طور پر کام کرتے ہیں جو جسم میں مخصوص ساخت اور جسمانی مقاصد کے لیے استعمال ہوتے ہیں۔ جینیاتی انجینئرنگ بائیوٹیکنالوجی کی ایک جدید تکنیک ہے جس میں سائنسدان ایک جاندار (عطیہ دینے والے جاندار) کے مفید جین کو منتخب اور الگ کر کے اسے دوسرے جاندار (عام طور پر بیکٹیریم) میں داخل کرتے ہیں۔ وہ جاندار جو اپنے خلیوں میں غیر ملکی جین رکھتا ہے اسے ٹرانسجینک آرگنزم کہتے ہیں۔ داخل شدہ جین ٹرانسج میں مطلوبہ مصنوعات (پروٹین) تیار کرتا ہے۔
