How are you?
The heat is still here: 40°C in the shade. There’s no breeze, and the sea is 29°C. Luckily, I’m holed up in my camp trailer with a new air conditioner, a cold beer in my hand, a book in front of me, and music playing in the background.

And I have two cold cans in this sunny and thirsty afternoon at the island of Pag, one Irish and one Croatian!
I’m ready to empty them and share the experience with you.

Irish Red Nitro

Brewed by O'Haras Brewery, Carlow, Ireland.
Can, 0.44 l, alcohol 4.3% ABV, IBU 25. Irish Red Ale style.

What do the Master Brewers say?

The same great flavours of O’Hara’s Irish Red with trademark hints of sweet caramel and mild nutty biscuit, all amplified with a smooth creamy mouth feel and a nice warming finish. O’Hara’s Irish Red Nitro is available exclusively on draught.

Well, this:

"O’Hara’s Irish Red Nitro is available exclusively on draught." is not true. I have a can.

The beer has a cloudy, ruby-red color with a small, creamy head. No aroma. It goes down smoothly, and on the palate I detect a pleasant bitterness along with hints of caramel and subtle herbal notes. It’s all very juicy.
The hoppy bitterness lingers in the aftertaste for a while.

Surprisingly juicy, easy to drink, and refreshing!
Nitro, I suppose, is what gives it that creamy, smooth texture. It’s not overly complex, with less alcohol, and if I had another can, I’d open it right away. Unfortunately, I only have this one, which I bought at a Plodin store for €2.69. It’s not available at our local stores.

Međimursko Lager

Brewed by Lepi Dečki Brewery Mihovljan, Međimurska županija Croatia.
Can, 0.5 l, alcohol 4.8% ABV, IBU 24. Lager style.

What do the Master Brewers say?

A Czech-style lager with copper hues, pleasant bitterness, and pronounced sweetness. Our first beer. An everyday beer, with you since 2016!

The beer has a cloudy orange color; the head is average and fades quickly. It has a hoppy aroma. It goes down smoothly; on the palate, I detect a very slight bitterness that intertwines with the sweetness of the malt and subtle herbal notes.
The aftertaste fades quickly.

A drinkable, and refreshing beer!
Malty, slightly sweet notes with moderate bitterness dominate. It’s not complex, but it’s balanced and refreshing. Better than most classic industrial lagers.
I found that in 2021 it won a silver medal at the London Beer Competition (82 points) in the lager category. But that was five years ago. A reliable and uncomplicated lager.
It’s not available locally, but here in Croatia you can find it in almost every store. Price: €2.30.

Frank Herbert, Heretics of Dune. The book has been translated into Slovenian. I’ve read the main Dune series, and this is a sequel.
While I’m on the subject, the first film adaptation of Dune, directed by David Lynch in 1984, is absolutely brilliant to me, whereas this second one, by Villeneuve, is nice but feels more like a sterile remake.
I don’t usually read sequels because they’re worse than the original, but this one is excellent! It takes place 1,500 years after the death of the God-Emperor, who transformed into a desert worm, and the political intrigues among the forces vying for dominance in the human universe are very intense. In short, it’s a costume drama.
