Frontier Is Now A Complete Experience

Hello, there! saydie@saydie here, playing Splinterlands everyday!

Splinterlands now has four different ranked modes that players can participate in. There is Wild Format, which is meant to be a place for players who want to play their cards from all the card sets, whether manually or through the use of automated services, since anything goes there. There is Modern Format for players who own the two most recent sets, but can only compete through manual play. There is also the Survival Mode that you can play to farm for Glint, so long as your cards did not get defeated and are on cooldown. And finally, we have the Frontier Mode that is a full free-to-play mode that both new and veteran players can participate in without any prior investment and be able to build their deck by only playing the game.

Until a few weeks ago, I would say that Frontier Mode was still not yet a full experience since the Foundation cards, including the Extra units that come later on, don't have any Dragon Archons or units, so even when Dragon was among the available elements in the battle ruleset, players can't just use them. But now, it all changes with the introduction of The Arena Vanguard, which features 8 cards in total, including one Dragon unit and Archon, making Frontier Mode now a full experience.

Why Dragons Are Important in Frontier?

It's been a while since I last played Frontier Mode, as I was currently occupied playing Survival Mode. That 250k Glint is just hard to pass, not to mention the additional Glint that I can get from the leaderboard and by joining the Ascension Tournament. But playing 250 survival battles is just a toll order when I am already playing more than 800 Modern battles within the two accounts that I'm playing. So it is really difficult right now to spare any time to play Frontier Mode. But I can say that I have played a decent amount of Frontier battles with all my Archons almost reaching level 3.

And as I played Frontier, it became more apparent that something was missing from it; that it is missing Dragons. It just feels like there was a glaring hole in the Frontier Mode experience when Dragons are missing, which I think does not make it a good thing, especially when you were trying to have new players get hooked into the game. What Dragon offers is not just a new element option, but also more flexibility for strategies, as it allows the use of other elements and combine it with Dragon units.

Thankfully, we now have those holes were now filled with the addition of the two Dragon cards in Frontier with the Arena Vanguard.

The first card that we have is Vaelok, which is a 11-mana Magic unit. For 11 mana, this card only has 5 health even at max level and was very slow with only 1 speed, but it has 3 magic damage that can easily pass most armors, and with Life Leech at level 4, its health will increase by 50% of the damage it inflicted, which will compensate for its low health. Aside from that, it also has Flying, which gives it a 25% chance to evade both melee and ranged attacks, as well as Demoralize, which reduces the melee damage of all opponent units by 1. Some rulesets that this card can be a good option for include Reverse Speed, Earthquake, and Wands Out.

Meanwhile, Aurendrak is the Legendary Dragon Archon, which is very important because only with this Archon can you use Dragon units along with an element of your choice. Compared to the other Archons, it costs 2 more mana, but I think that cost is more than compensated due to the flexibility that this card will offer, not to mention its Tactics ability that will allow you to choose 1 unit to give either Flank ability that will allow a melee unit next to it to have the Reach ability, or can give it the Void ability so that it can reduce the damage that the unit receives from magic attacks.

Closing

Now, I can see that Frontier will become more fun to play with, with Dragons now included in it. It will give more room for different strategies and card synergies that were not present in the Frontier Mode before. That said, it can also lead to some anxieties because The Arena Vanguard seems to have a limited supply, and collecting these cards will likely take more time and effort than our usual Frontier cards, so those that were lucky enough to have them will likely have better odds of winning than those who don't. In short, I must step up my efforts to be able to collect these new cards as fast as I can.

Thank you, and see you on the next post!
