Caring for myself in calmness and dreaming of pedaling | LOH #283 (ENG/ESP)

Hello dear ladiesofhive@ladiesofhive community. 💜

I'm really happy to take part in this special contest, where we women empower each other both on and off the blockchain. Here we share from the deepest part of ourselves, and today I want to do that from my reality: living with lupus, with good days and not-so-good days, but always learning to take care of myself.

I'm going to answer both topics because I feel they're deeply connected in my life: self-care when I'm not sick, and that hobby I admire and dream of practicing: spinning.

How do you care for your body and mind when you are not sick? What is your everyday health care routine like?

Self-care when I'm not sick (while living with lupus)

For those who don't know, lupus is an autoimmune disease. In simple terms: my body's defense system, which should be attacking viruses or bacteria, gets confused and starts attacking healthy tissue instead. It can affect my skin, joints, kidneys… and one of the things that makes it worse is stress.

I'm not in crisis mode all the time. There are months when I feel strong, active, almost "normal." But that's exactly where the danger lies: right when I feel good, I can let my guard down. And with lupus, letting your guard down can mean a relapse.

That's why my self-care routine for when I'm not sick is so important. And the main thing I take care of is my emotional health.

How do I avoid stress?

I don't mess around with sleep. Seven or eight hours, no exceptions. If I let fatigue build up, I know I'll pay for it later, so that comes first.

Then movement… but without overdoing it. No killing myself running or punishing myself. I walk, I stretch, I dance like an idiot at home. My body needs to move, but on its own terms, without violence.

As for food, I try to keep it as clean as I can. Nothing too processed, lots of water, lots of veggies. Food is my medicine, and I mean that.

My phone… oh, my phone. If I notice it's starting to make me anxious, I turn it off, full stop. I love Hive and Discord, but I consciously take breaks. Because if I don't, I'll get swallowed up by the screen.

And stress… well, stress is never going away, so I've learned to receive it. I breathe deeply (that 4-7-8 technique works like a charm), I write down how I feel, or if I need to, I just cry. And if the day is really rough, I give myself permission to do nothing. Because that's also a form of self-care.

With lupus, I've learned that taking care of myself when I'm feeling good is what keeps me from getting sick again.

What is that hobby you would like to be able to do for fun, and why can't you take it up in your free time?"

The hobby I admire and would love to practice is spinning.

I see women of all ages, with all kinds of bodies, on social media, on those stationary bikes, with music blasting, sweating and laughing at the same time. They're not just there to lose weight. They're there for that feeling of releasing stress, for the community, for the fun. And that's exactly what I need the most: a way to let go of tension without damaging my joints, with good company and a good vibe.

So why don't I take it up in my free time? Because I live in #Cuba, and here, spinning is no ordinary luxury. It's not just that it's expensive – which it is – but in a country with so much scarcity, the priorities are different. The money I'd spend on a membership or a stationary bike… it wouldn't be right to use it on that when there are more urgent needs at home: food, medicine, transportation. It's not that I don't want to, it's that it wouldn't be responsible.

But that doesn't stop me from dreaming about it. And until that moment comes, I make do with symbolic pedaling: climbing stairs, walking fast, or imagining myself in one of those dark rooms with neon lights, pedaling hard to chase away the stress that lupus hates so much.

So that's me: a woman who learns to take care of herself on the good days so she doesn't fall apart on the bad ones, and who dreams of pedaling her stress away while dancing to the beat of the music.

Thank you, ladiesofhive@ladiesofhive, for this space. Taking care of yourself isn't selfish, it's survival. And dreaming of a hobby isn't frivolous either: it's remembering that even when circumstances are tough, you still want to enjoy life.

With love from #Cuba.💜🇨🇺

________ ESPAÑOL_______

Hola, querida comunidad ladiesofhive@ladiesofhive. 💜
