Nine years on the Hive blockchain
What next ?
This morning I was thrilled to see a notification from @hivebuzz marking my ninth year on the Hive blockchain. It’s hard to believe it’s been that long! While I’m not looking to make a big deal out of it, hitting this milestone definitely brings a quiet sense of accomplishment. There are 106358 other users who have had the same accomplishment, so it certainly does not matter a lot. But what matters to most of us is that, where has Hive gone in these nine years ?
Personally I believe, it has quietly evolved in three major ways:
We are still alive: Hive was born out of Steem nine years ago, and looking back, it's incredible to see where the broader Web3 and social blockchain space has gone since then. Most projects from that era are completely dead, abandoned, or turned into ghost towns. Yet, here we are. Surviving the race for this long entirely on our own is a massive feat.
Infrastructure Evolution: It went from a slow, text-heavy blogging chain to a highly optimized backend. Major upgrades like One Block Irreversibility (OBI) mean transactions now achieve irreversible finality in milliseconds.
The HAF Revolution: The launch of the Hive Application Framework (HAF) completely changed the game for developers. Instead of forcing apps to read the raw blockchain directly, HAF allows developers to spin up traditional, fast databases (like PostgreSQL) that sync seamlessly with Hive. This is why apps like PeakD, Splinterlands, and LeoFinance can run without massive lag.
I know there have been plenty of debates questioning whether Hive is truly decentralized, whether it has zero corporate ownership, or if it really is community-and-witness governed. But that’s a whole separate discussion. You can call me an optimist, but as I get older, I realize that negativity drains us without us even realizing it's eating away at us from the inside.
Each of us have been a literal brick in the foundation of one of Web3's longest-running, uninterrupted social experiments. We might not feel like throwing a party, but this quiet sense of accomplishment is certainly justified.
So, the real question is: what’s next? Can we market Hive better? I’ve often said that we need to onboard apps that drive true mass adoption—places where people use Hive for real-world value, not just monetary gain. Imagine a decentralized platform for reporting government loopholes to improve democracy, or a space for completely honest, un-bribable product and service reviews. Even if it feels like a small drop in the ocean, it’s about the satisfaction of doing our part. Once we achieve mass utility, the price will naturally reflect that value. I know this is an endless conversation, but that's just my take. Do you agree?
By the way, hitting this milestone means it's time for my annual footer refresh, how does the new one look? Ultimately, to take this blockchain forward, we need real people showing their real faces and sharing their authentic stories. That’s the one space AI can never win — true human emotion.
Footer specially designed for the Silver Bloggers Community - the community of silvery "oldies" from the famous Generation X onward.......The place where we all keep our memories to share with the future. The library of a silly, wild bunch of Silvers. The Silvery Book of the Wise!
