Hirotugu Akaike

Hirotugu Akaike (赤池 弘次 Akaike Hirotsugu) (IPA: [akaike çiɾotsɯɡɯ]; November 5, 1927 – August 4, 2009) was a Japanese statistician working in information theory. In the early 1970s, he formulated a criterion for model selection—the Akaike information criterion, which is now widely used.
Akaike information criterion
The Akaike information criterion (AIC) is an estimator of the relative quality of statistical models for a given set of data. Given a collection of models for the data, AIC estimates the quality of each model, relative to each of the other models. Thus, AIC provides a means for model selection.

Awards
In 2006, Akaike was awarded the Kyoto Prize for his major contribution to statistical science and modeling in the development of the Akaike information criterion. On November 5, 2017, Google displayed a Doodle for what would have been Akaike's 90th birthday.[1][2]![Hirotugu-Akaike.jpg]
