The unforseen connection

Greetings!

If some had to told me that I would get married to a stranger, I wouldn't have believed or listened to such fellow as I have always think of getting married to a friend of mine who we have known ourselves for years, not only that, this same person happened to be the daughter of my mum's friend and you know that friends especially mothers who are friends always wish that their children of opposite sex can get married to each other as this would help in strengthening their friendship or relationship the more.

So, just because of this kind of our mother's wish, I and Juliet were both enrolled in the same primary school at the same time, although, I was older than her, by about a year, but at the end, we still found ourselves both enrolled in the same class at the same time with a difference of a year between us.

I could remember our parents jokingly telling us that,

“Sam, this is your wife.” This is also how Juliet's mother used to tell her that I'm her husband.

We both while growing up thought it's just an ordinary joke as our friends have even known us to be husband and wife as they used to refer to us as husband and wife.

However, on a particular Thursday afternoon, Juliet and her mum came to our house and it was when she came that both my mum and her mum began to tell us that they have always wanted us to end together as husband and wife and that they were there to seek our opinions about it, then we were about to write our SSCE exam.

When we were asked this simple question of,

“What did you both think about both of you having a relationship together?”

I could not even say a word neither does Juliet know what to say as this their actions was so shocking to us, but when I realised that they both were taking this matter too far, I stood up and I said to both of our mothers that,

“We thought this was a joke before now, but now that you have made it real, what I would say is that this would not be possible.”

After I had expressed my mind to everyone at the meeting, Juliet also stood and backed me up on what I had just said and on hearing this from both of us, our mothers faces went cold and one can easily see disappointment in them which was well written all over them.

It's when both of us had spoken that they both began to explain the reason behind their actions to us saying,

“Sam and Juliet, we know that we should have got you informed about our intentions a long time ago, we are so sorry for not getting you informed. The reason behind our intentions is to make our friendship stronger, please, help us to make it stronger than expected as you both are the ones to make it stronger.”

After Juliet mum had said this, I replied her and said,

“Mummy, there's nothing wrong with your relationship already and if you think you both can make it stronger, there's still other means to do so.”

Even with all I have said to both of them and Juliet, none of them had seen any sense or point in my presentation as they insisted on their intentions.

However, for us to make them happy, we listened to them and made our relationship more formal than before.

After our senior secondary school education, we both gained admission into the same university to study different courses. I was admitted into the university to study civil engineering while Juliet was admitted to study Law.

It's in the course of our study that Juliet started to give me this kind of a strange attitude and during this period, she was only maintaining distance from me, even if I called her number, she would not answer.

When I saw her change in behaviour, I quickly called her mum to inform her of her change in behaviour. After calling her mum, she promised to talk to her and to my greatest surprise, she changed a little bit as she started answering her calls, but this could only last for a while, but thank God for Angela, Juliet roommate and course mate, she was the one that told me that Juliet was seeing another guy named Hammed in their department.

After Angela had told me this, I quickly called my mum just to inform her of what Angela told me and not only that, I also informed her that I'm no longer interested in the relationship again. My mum promised to call Juliet mum and that she would give me the feedback.

My mum after an hour called back and told me that she was disappointed in what Juliet mum had said, she said that her mum told her that there's nothing she can do about her daughter's decision and that I should move on.

Although the response was so disheartening, even at that, I had been expecting such a response from Juliet and her mum a long time before now, so, I decided to move on with my life.

So, Juliet friend Angela and I met at the bank 🏧 on a particular day and it's at the bank 🏧 stand that we had a long conversation about what Juliet did to me, she felt so sorry for me and asked me to move on, after we had discussed this, we both departed for our different destinations and when it was night, I called to thank her for her kind words and she asked me not to mention.

So, ever since then, we are always calling each other to discuss one thing or the other and it's in one of our meeting at their faculty basement that I showed my interest in her and without any delay she accepted my proposal and that's how we started, today, I'm happily married to Angela, Juliet's friend who happened to be a stranger to me.

As for Juliet, she's yet to get married as her then boyfriend later dumped her for another beautiful damsel in their department and even after ten years of our graduation from the university, she still remains single.

Also, the relationship between both her mum and my mum is no more there as my mum felt betrayed by the response of Juliet's mum.
