Developing A Positive Response To Criticism
No matter how hardworking, talented, gifted, good, successful, or careful you are, there will always be people who will question your judgment, fault your decision, express their opinion, or even point out some mistakes in what you do. But the truth is that they should not become obstacles to achieving your success. As a matter of fact, if you handle criticisms well, they can become powerful tools to make you better, make you grow, and help you to achieve your goals. This is why you have to develop a positive response to criticisms.

There are people that, when criticisms come, they will become offended, defensive, angry, or even discouraged. But there are also others who will learn, improve, and continue to make progress even in the face of the same criticisms.
In order to develop a positive response to criticisms, there are very vital points that you need to note. You need to learn to listen attentively before you react. Listen to the words without adding emotions to them, and also look beyond the tone. Someone can be making a very crucial point, but the way and manner they are doing it may not feel comfortable with you. If you pick offence, you may miss the message in the statement. When someone criticises you, your first response should not be to defend yourself or pick offence. Try to listen carefully and understand what they are trying to say. Ask yourself if there is an element of truth in what is being said. Trust me, even a criticism that is delivered poorly can still pass some very vital information.
You also need to separate constructive criticism from destructive one. Not all criticism is the same. Constructive criticism should help you to grow and improve, while destructive criticism can discourage someone, insult, or even provoke them. That you are to response positively to criticisms does not mean that you should allow any opinion from everywhere. Know the difference between positive criticisms and negative criticism. You can accept advice that will help you to grow and improve, but not the negative comments that can reduce your confidence or make you begin to think less of yourself. It takes wisdom to know the criticism that should deserve your attention and the one to simply ignore.
In addition to this, you have to also learn to use criticism as a tool for growth. Every good criticism that you welcome will give you an opportunity to improve your skills, character, and performance. Which means that instead of seeing the criticism as an attack on your person, or as an opposition, you should rather see it as a tool for improvement. Always try to look out for important information in the opinions of people. For example, someone can make a comment about your performance, instead of seeing it as an attack, just ask yourself what you can learn from it. Remember that growth begins when you are humble enough to see beyond criticisms and then pick out vital information from it.

However, you should not allow criticisms to define your self-worth. That you got criticism from someone does not make you a failure. A lot of people also make mistakes, and no human is perfect. This means that you still have areas that need improvement. So do not allow one negative comment that you get to make you to begin to see yourself as being less. After all, your worth and your personal value is way beyond one negative comment. Your value is not dependent on someone's opinion nor on their criticism but it is dependent on your character, efforts, and on your willingness to keep learning. Always try to maintain your confidence at all times while being open to learn new things. So even when you are criticised, do not stop making attempts, but you should keep trying and getting better.
