Worm Farm Update

A few months ago I wrote about the make do worm farm I made from old broccoli boxes. It was the middle of our subtropical winter at the time. Since then the worm farm has gone through a few reasonably cold nights and a couple of rainstorms. They've also taken care of a fair amount of kitchen scraps.

So how are my worms doing now? Let's take a look!

I use damp layers of newspaper to keep the soil moist and dark for the worms.

There's a few there near the surface. At the bottom of the photo you can see a blueberry they haven't got to yet, and some eggshell.

A few more at the other end of the box. They prefer this end at the moment because it was where I last put food scraps for them.

They seem really happy and healthy, and the food scraps have mostly disappeared.

The box itself has held up pretty well. The damage to the corners has got a little worse, and the air vent on top is looking weathered, but it all still works.

I'll look at replacing the the lid if it gets any worse. The boxes are only $1AUD from the local produce market and I can reuse them, or parts of them, to avoid them going to landfill.

The next test for the worm farm is the warmer days of Spring. Hopefully the foam box continues to keep them nicely insulated.
