For Cathie

My best friend Cathie makes me laugh,
we laugh together over nothing much,
walking along canals, over moors,
past reservoirs and fields of sheep.

We walk, we talk, we share our lives,
the small details and the grand dreams,
discuss our children, our husbands,
giggle like curious schoolgirls at sex.

Sometimes I treat us to a cafe,
share a pot of tea, maybe cake,
though Cathie only has a little,
a wee Scottish lass, gentle and kind.

Other days, we help each other out,
like yesterday, stacking logs in my shed,
spider webs and all, ready for winter’s call,
the warmth of friendship in quiet work.

We swap recipes, truths, disasters,
disappointments and gratitudes alike.
I admire my friend Cathie, who’s happy,
content in her life, counting blessings daily.

She never expected to be so fortunate in life
a loving family, a circle of love,
and a friend to walk with through summer’s glow,
laughing weekly on long, winding roads.
