Sweet Tooth Test in Thailand 🍰

Sweets aren’t just for kids… adults are just better at pretending they don’t need them 😄

In Thailand, desserts are a whole separate story for me.
Local traditional sweets might feel a bit unusual at first, but I actually like them more — they’re often made from natural ingredients and not overloaded with sugar.

But Thailand is full of tourists, especially from Europe, so many places try to adapt and offer more “familiar” desserts.

Today, we decided to give one of those places a chance… although honestly, I already knew how it would end.

First Impressions

Visually — everything looks amazing.

Huge variety, bright colors, perfect shapes. What I managed to shoot on my phone is just a small part of what they had.
They even sell mini versions of cakes — something I rarely saw back home.

Fresh fruits, neat presentation, everything looks premium.

And that’s pretty much where the good part ends.

A Bit of Context

Back in the day, I used to be really into baking.
I’ve made more than a thousand different cake recipes — not professionally, just as a hobby.

So for me, the most important thing has never been how a dessert looks… it’s how it tastes.

The Reality Check

Modern pastry industry relies heavily on:

  • artificial flavors

  • colorings

  • preservatives

And you can feel it almost instantly.

On top of that, Thailand has its own limitations.
Traditionally, locals worked with rice-based dough, not wheat. Good flour here is expensive, hard to store in this climate, and often imported.

And it shows.

The Taste Test

We picked a trendy dessert with so-called “Dubai chocolate”.

Big mistake.

The taste? Just sugar overload.
Not rich, not deep — just aggressively sweet to the point where it kills everything else.

That “Dubai chocolate”? Only in the name.
The green filling inside looked… suspicious at best and had nothing in common with the real thing.

I’ve tried authentic handmade Dubai chocolate before — and trust me, this wasn’t even close.

Final Thoughts

If you’re not too picky, you might still enjoy something here with a coffee or tea.
Better stick to desserts with real fruit — at least those are harder to mess up.

But honestly?
I’d rather just walk past.

Right now, I only know one small place in Pattaya that makes proper homemade cakes in limited batches — and that’s where I go when I actually want something sweet.

Enjoy your food… and choose wisely 😄
