Crochet Breakfast Platter

A friend of mine, @danicreates, dropped a photo inspiration of a crochet breakfast platter in our group chat. At the time, I was working on an order. Two actually, simultaneously. Here I am again, accepting multiple orders, all because I felt inspired by my client's inspiration pictures. I think I might be at that point where a client shows me a photo of what they want and then I go ahead and create it.

So Dani sends us a photo of a crochet breakfast platter and I just looked at it. Then I looked at it again and then I looked at it once more. My daughter didn't see it but I was just sure she'll love it. One more look and I put down my current WIP then gathered the yarns I needed.

I started off with the sunny side up egg. I had a lot of white milk cotton yarns. I did not know what to do with them because they were so thin. I can really feel the shrinkflation with some of the yarns I bought, especially the white yarns. A lot of crocheters have been posting saying they bought the same yarn, the same shade, the same seller, the same brand but it came out a little bit thinner than their previous purchase. That's one of the reasons now that I buy yarns in bulk.

Anyways, I started with the egg yolk. I didn't have the golden yellow which would have been perfect for the organic egg version but this egg yellow color suits just fine. Another challenge I faced, since the yarns have different thickness is how to mix and match the different thickness of yarns I have. It's a good thing sunny side up eggs doesn't need to look perfectly flat. The egg yolk is most probably the easiest part.

I then made the egg white. It was a combination of single crochets and double crochets all over. I wanted it to look a little bumpy here and there so I just randomly put in clusters and double crochet increases amongst the single crochets to get that uneven edges and bumpy look that sunny side up eggs have. I tried to give it a crusty slightly burnt effect on the edge but I did not have the golden brown yarn I needed. I know. Tons of yarns in my stash but I do not have the one yarn I actually need. Anyways, I tried the dark orange shade but it did not sit that well with my clients at home so off it went.

Next is the slice of bread. It's nothing but a series of single crochets until I get the height and width I desired. I made 2 panels for the front and the back. Then I got a dark shade of brown since I did not have that perfect shade for the perfect toasted sides of the bread slice. Let's just say the loaf was left in the oven a little longer than it should. It makes for good playtime conversation. It could add a little bit more to the play pretend story. I thought about keeping the slice open on the top so my daughter and I could make pretend sandwiches where we stuff the eggs, veggies and condiments inside. But I changed my mind and decided that's going to be for another crochet play set.

Then there's the bacon. I literally just chose the colors in my yarn stash that closely resembles that of a bacon slice. I wanted it crunchy and crispy looking so I did the same thing I did with the egg yolk, only a bit more.

A good breakfast platter is incomplete if it doesn't have coffee. I pulled the one I made from months ago from my daughter's kitchen set. Et voila! We now have a decent breakfast platter. I wanted to add pancakes as well but I couldn't find the right colors so I put a hold on that.

It has been a while since I last created a crochet for my little one. She's not so little anymore but every once in a while, we still play a little bit of tea party, or pretend sari sari store. While she's not yet in her tweeners, I'm going to enjoy as much time during playtime as I can with her. Thank you Dani, my sister in crafts for the inspiration.
