First impression is the first thing people perceive about you; it is what they think of you in the first few seconds of their encounter with you. It is derived subconsciously from the energy you give when people come in contact with you, what you say, and how you say it, mostly from how you appear, how you communicate and how you behave. It often shapes how people interact and perceive you afterwards.

We are often told about how powerful a first impression is, how your first impression matters a lot, as it is mostly used to define you. The first impression you give to people is what they mostly use as an image of you. It is what comes to their mind whenever they say something about you, hear your name or have another encounter with you.

A first impression is very important, as it is very difficult to change once it has been imprinted in the mind; it takes a lot of time and effort, far more than the time used to form an impression about you at the initial meeting.

First impressions influence what people trust you with, especially when it comes to hiring you; a bad first impression can easily disqualify one from being hired for a job or even appointed to a leadership position, since it leaves a lasting stain.

First impressions can only be changed through prolonged, repeated interactions and a long relationship; altering a first impression takes conscious effort. As such, one has to be very intentional about the first impression of themselves they allow others to see.

Since we are judged by our appearance, how we communicate and how we behave, we should consciously choose our words when meeting people for the first time, try to be more polite with our words, dress properly, groom, make eye contact, and give a strong handshake, as it affirms self-confidence.
