Harry The Half Finned Dolphin

Living near Moreton we are truly spoiled for choice when it comes to wildlife. Whale season is a special time of year but there’s always something to see.

This is Harry the Half Finned Dolphin. His name comes from his distinctive half fin and also the artificial reef, Harry Atkins reef, he frequents.

For the past 3 years there hasn’t been many times I’ve visited that he hasn’t come over to say hello. He’s very inquisitive and comfortable around us, greeting us with his signature bubble blowing.

Some days we don’t catch as many or as big a fish as we like so he often gets to steal a fish or two that are sent back.
Here’s some pics of a Grinner we released. Despite his size Harry was scared out of trying to grab this one. They do have pretty scary teeth to be fair. Poor Harry.

At the nearby Tangalooma Island resort Dolphins are fed regularly and I believe he’d be a daily visitor. He’s always been on his own but this trip he had a few friends with him.

It was a special treat to see him swimming with another dolphin but the best surprise was a young calf along for the ride. Harry came and went a few times through the day, at various spots on the reef, and not far behind were these 2.

Such a refreshing site to see and certainly made my day. There were a few others, also with damaged dorsal fins around that day so who knows, maybe Harry finally has a pod of his own. We will see in our next adventure.
