I miss sewing!: Let’s make a DIY 3D flower with fabric.

Hi everyone and a happy new month to you all. I hope you all are doing well. My life lately has been busy and I haven’t had much time to sew. I find it difficult to multitask, and as a result, my hobbies especially sewing often suffer.

I didn’t realise how much I had missed sewing until my sister-in-law asked me to make a dress for her. She wanted to make a simple mini dress with flower detailing on the chest and hem of the dress. She is one of my favourite people to sew for, so I couldn't say no.

Staring at the model wearing a red mini dress on my phone screen, I thought aloud “This will be easy”. And indeed, it was. Patterning and cutting had me reminiscing about those times I spent making clothes.

The sewing was my favourite part, the pedal felt so good and the sound of the moving needle was therapeutic. I really thought I missed tailoring until I got to ironing. I had had a lot of accidents with using the iron and I never seem to like the hot steam that comes out of it.

After the ironing struggle I got to the fun part which is making the flower and that is what I will be sharing with you today.
I made 3D flowers to mimic the flower detailing on the dress and the dress was an inspiration from Pinterest. Making this flower was easy but it was a little time-consuming.

To make these flowers, I used:
Red crepe fabric
Paper for patterning
Medium-sized Covered button

Steps:

I cut out my patterns. One for the big petal and one for the small petal. I also cut a small round flower which will be in the centre of the flower.

Cut the pattern out of the fabric. For one flower, I need 10 big petals, 10 small petals, 2 centre flowers, and 1 covered button in size 30.

I sew together the pieces. Then turn it to the right side.

I stitched them together. First, I place the small petal on the big petal and stitch 5 of those together as illustrated below. I stitched the flower in the middle and then the button.
I made sure all the stitches were tight.

I ironed the flower and did other needed finishings.
