Hashima 端島 Island - Japans Abandoned Ghost Island

Hey there,

i recently heard about Hashima island. So i had to make some research and found some cool stuff i would like to share with you!

Hashima or also called "Battleship Island" (because of it´s shape) has for sure something eerie about it.

Hashima Island - 端島, or Hashima or commonly called Gunkanjima (軍艦島, what equals Battleship Island

The Island was established in 1887 for undersea coal mining. Hashima was meaningful throughout the growing industrialisation around 1900.

It became a darker meaning during WWII around 1930 when forced laborers from Korea or China where forced to work there under harsh conditions.

Also after the war and until 1974, the island was still populated up to 5000 Japanese laborers before the mines started to run out of coal.

Soon, all the population was departed and the island was left abandoned for the next 30 years an nature took over.

Today the island is open for tourists. But you are not allowed to walk around freely and enter the buildings. You must stay on the touristic paths because the crumbling buildings might collapse. Don´t worry though, you do not have to put yourself in danger, you can actually visit Hashima through your computer!

There are for sure a lot of story's about the history of this island and also today people claim to hear strange noises or see flickering light in the abandoned buildings.

When i heard about this island i immediately found it fascinating and would be very interested in visiting! Of course it would be nice to access all the buildings and not just admire it from the touristic perspective. I can imagine it could be a bit spooky!
