Ayer bajé a La Guaira.

They say material things can be recovered, and that is true, but you cannot say that to someone who has lost their home, the space they saved and fought for over years to make their refuge, in a country where the word "savings" is so hard to utter because it is a broken country.

And suddenly, in seconds, the fruit of long years collapses and you are left with nothing. Without the material, and in most cases, without your loved ones.

Yesterday I went down to La Guaira. I didn’t do it out of curiosity or morbid interest, but out of love. I went to accompany my cousin to look the emptiness in the face: to see what was left of the building where her apartment, her home, her refuge used to be.

As we traveled the road, my mind insisted on remembering the La Guaira of before. That is why, in this post, I prefer to share photos of what it was that vibrant place, full of life, sun, and happy weekends. I need to hold onto that memory, because the reality I found yesterday left me speechless, with my eyes full of tears and a heart completely shattered.

The contrast is devastating. The sea is still there, with the same imperturbable blue as always, but when you look back at the land, there is only desolation. There is a heavy silence, interrupted at times by someone's weeping or by the sound of those trying to work among the rubble.

But what marked me the most, what remains clinging to my body, is the smell. A smell of loss, of dust, of everything that was cut short in just a few seconds. A smell of broken dreams and hopes.

image.png

Holding my cousin in the middle of that scene made me understand, in the hardest way, how fragile everything we build really is. Watching people walk through the solitude of what is no longer there is a blow to the soul.

I am finding it hard to process, hard to find the words to write about anything else on the platform, but today I choose to do so. I choose to remember La Guaira like this, as in these photos: alive, noisy, and eternal in our memory, while we heal the pain of seeing her broken.

In the midst of that silence, these lines finally gave shape to what my chest couldn't quite let go of:

florecitas de otono.png

I bring photos of yesterday,
of the usual sun, of the unhurried blue,
of the La Guaira we used to see,
with the warmth of the sea and the breeze.

florecitas de otono.png

Yesterday I went down to join the grief,
to hold a hand amidst the wound,
to see the ceiling turned into ground,
and memory suspended in the air.

florecitas de otono.png

There are no words for the smell of the void,
the one that floats between rubble and pain,
a wind that runs freezing and cold
over what once was our shore.

florecitas de otono.png

The sea remains the same, blue and eternal,
as if the ground had never shaken,
while deep down, in our innermost selves,
we weep for what has been erased from the map.

florecitas de otono.png

People pass by, work, and walk,
with a solitude that is breathed close by,
while our gaze bends down,
searching for life behind the crack.

florecitas de otono.png

I hold onto the memory of the sun,
onto the embrace that held us yesterday,
because in the midst of so much pain,
love is the only thing that did not stop.
