HANDLING CORRECTION
Anyone who loves learning accepts correction, but a person who hates being corrected is stupid (Proverbs 12:1).
A person who refuses correction will end up poor and disgraced, but the one who accepts correction will be honored (Proverbs 13:18).
These two Bible verses reflect on how to take in correction. It speaks loudly on how one should humbly accept correction, especially when they are ready to learn. As the Bible verse says, a person who hates being corrected is stupid and will remain so.
One of the traits of the wise has always been to accept correction especially when they are wrong or make mistakes. It is even wiser to know that you can't be an island and cannot know all. That's why it's really so important that one is open to receive not just corrections but rebuke and reproof.
Three days ago, I made a mistake by sharing a plagiarised post verbatim and I was rebuked by the HiveWatchers... It came at a period when I was very happy with my progress here on Hive.
I had been blogging consistently for about 16 days and was seeing an exponential rise in the engagements and rewards on my post. So it was very hurtful that I lost all that due to a mistake.
Already, I sent an appeal to the HiveWatchers stating what happened and they did an investigation albeit they didn't do that well though. So according to them, I'm still guilty.
But while sending replies and waiting for their response, I reflected on my actions. And then I learned two things:
- Understanding your facts correctly and summarizing your information correctly really makes everything better. It makes you more trustworthy and allows you to learn to be more accurate in the future.
- No one enjoys being corrected, but it's worth a lot. I don't think it's wise not to listen when someone is trying to help you!
Although I'm of the school of thought that it will be easier to receive corrections if they can be given in a careful, uplifting, encouraging, and helpful way. But you really can't control others. You cannot get them to correct you in a way that is acceptable to you.
It turns out that it is much wise to accept the correction, regardless of the way it is given. And it's better to focus on receiving the correction than how it was given.
“Do not correct a mocker or he will hate you. Correct a wise man and he will love you. (Proverbs 9:8)
This has helped me to accept the punishment of the HiveWatchers. I know I was wrong, even though it wasn't an intentional attempt to plagiarise and I have come to rest with the decision. Presently, I expect a downvote from spaminator on this post as my appeal on the Discord channel hasn't been attended to but I have decided to continue blogging and hopefully sooner or later the blacklisting gets reversed.
