Outside classroom
Attending agricultural university has exposed me to farming. I'm a 400-level student of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture in Abia state Nigeria.
Before now, I remember how I would hide at the back of our house whenever my parents were preparing to go to the farm in the morning, or I would pretend to be sick just to escape going to the farm.
But, believe it or not, since I got into university, farming has become a normal activity โ in fact, it's a course on its own with 8 credit units, so you shouldn't joke with it.
In my 100 level, farming wasn't taken as seriously as this. However, the university has made this course mandatory for all 400-level students. It's similar to our industrial training, and I was given a portion of land to cultivate maize.
This project is a very challenging one because it's something I've not done before ,I didn't even know where to start from at the beginning, even though a supervisor was assigned to everyone,I was still not sure of my capacity, but with the help of my cousemate who put me through to make sure I do each step at the right time ๐ค .
Today I'm happy to share my progress with you all , am I doing a good job?
My progress will be scored based on proper weed,pest/insect control. We have a supervisor who comes to check on us about twice a month for scoring, and the final score will be given during harvest.
When I told my parents about all this they were so excited with the initiative, because it's made their daughter who always run away from farm work while at home is now a farmer in the university ๐
Well I'm actually enjoying the whole idea and I'm so proud of myself self this is just like me acquiring a new skill.
It's being such a nice experience, and next semester we'll be going into livestock farming ,I can't wait for that time too I'm sure it will be a nice experience too .
Thank you for stopping by ๐ค
