My father's decision

I remember my father almost every day for one reason or another. He left us years ago and his decision generated a lot of feelings, emotions and unanswered questions.I tried to understand the reasons, but it is impossible to know what he thought and felt during those days, I can only guess or imagine.

He was a physically strong man who had worked since he was very young. He retired by his own decision, because he considered that it was no longer safe for him and passengers, to continue driving a bus in his 70s.

And one day his body became ill and his mind did not accept this condition, which led him to see doctors, have tests and be in a clinic, which he avoided all his life. He exercised to counteract the health ailments, doing push-ups every day and jumping rope with great agility.

"You have to get tough with exercise",he would say to me and my five sisters. And so his instilled in us the importance of exercising or doing sports. And I also remember that he used to prepare a restorative for us with red wine and an eye of cattle that he would put in the bottle to age. It might look disgusting to the eye, but it was effective for our health.

He added grated onion to everything he ate and drank liquefied aloe vera almost every day.

But perhaps being without much to do and then getting sick affected him, and he began to feel useless, even though at that time he had no economic problems and could live peacefully at home with my mother and his daughters and grandsons.

My father ultimately did not accept being sick, and that affected his desire to live.

The last time I spoke to him, I did it over the phone. I had returned to the city where I lived because I had to take care of my children and my work. He was already at home, taking care of my mom and sisters. I called him to see how he was feeling.

"Hello daddy!. How are you feeling today?"

"Hello, daughter, I'm lying here like a good-for-nothing".

"Don't say that, daddy; you have never been useless, you worked hard for your family, and you took care of us with a lot of love. Now let us take care of you".

But those words that wanted to help him understand that his life could be very happy with his family were not enough.

"I am no longer good for anything and I no longer want to live, I don't want to be a burden to you". Words that he had already told us since he got sick.

And I was left with the feeling that he had not listened to me, and he was left with his thoughts.

A few days later, while I was at work, I was called to the director's office. I remember what Mrs. Maria, the secretary, said to me.

"You have a call from your sister".

I immediately imagined the worst, that something bad had happened. And indeed it had.

I listened with the phone glued to my ear and remained silent while my sister cried and told me. "He did it". It was a very hard moment because, even though I didn't accept it, I expected it.I could only cry when I arrived at my mother and sisters' side.

The years have passed, and I have accepted that my father made his decision, perhaps emotionally or for the reasons that were in his mind at that moment when he decided to free his soul from his sick and aging body.

While he lived, he was a loving and responsible human being who left wonderful memories for those who knew him. His soul now shines resplendent in eternity.
