When Structure Starts Feeling Like a Roadblock
If there’s one thing I dislike about working in an organization, it’s the structure, not because structure is useless, but because it can be misused. I understand why companies build layers, processes, and “proper channels”, it keeps things moving, especially when the team is big. But some days, it feels like certain roles exist mainly to slow everyone else down.
Today was one of those days.
A corporate manager showed up at my project and started what looked like an “audit”, except it didn’t feel formal, organized, or even productive. It was more like a random stream of questions, jumping from one topic to another without context. No clear objective, no agenda, no direction. Just chaos.
And because I didn’t want to be seen as uncooperative, I stayed, listened, answered, and tried to make sense of it. Almost two hours gone, and when it ended, I couldn’t even pinpoint what the outcome was supposed to be. No action items, no closure, no value. Just time taken.
Peter Drucker once said, “Time is the scarcest resource and unless it is managed, nothing else can be managed.” That line hit me hard today.
I can’t control how others do their job, but I can control my boundaries. Next time, I’ll ask for the purpose upfront. I’ll request an agenda. I’ll push for a time limit. If it’s not productive, I’ll do my best to step away.
Today was a bad experience, but I’m hoping the next few days will feel lighter, quieter, and more focused.
