Thinking about US politics
So I've been contemplating the nature of US politics lately. If I had to label myself, I'd say I'm a solarpunk anarchist, so I don't really buy into most of the bullshittery that comes out of our political propaganda machine. I realize that I am not immune, and there are probably things that I don't question today that ten years from now, I'll wonder how I didn't see it for the nonsense it is, but I do my best. The other day, I had a bit of a Twitter rant:
The United States' two main religions are "Democrats" and "Republicans." Both of these religions will mostly claim to be Christians, but they are Ds and Rs that use bible quotes to attempt to lend some air of legitimacy to their modern, neo-religions.
They don't care what horrors their religion actually perpetuates in their name, they will still claim the moral high ground no matter what.
They will call the other religion the devil even tho the differences between them are minimal and surface level at best.
They reach ecstatic states in praise of their charismatic leaders and will close their ears to any criticism. Democrats will think I am not talking about them with this one, but I am.
They will gladly tithe and volunteer for their religion, & not question the blatant corruption.
They wear symbols of their religion like red or blue ties or flag pins on their lapels.
They perform rituals where they pledge allegiance to a flag and listen to sermons from their charismatic leaders. They read texts written by those same leaders.
Their high holiday is voting day, but there are lesser holidays like primaries and "debate" performances.
They send out tracts in the mail to try and convert others to their religion, as well as armageddon-fire-&-brimstone advertisements on tv warning people about the other.
If you don't belong to either major religion, they think you are being Used and Fooled and are Under The Sway of the other one. To not belong to either religion is to be a tool of whichever one is not theirs, in their eyes.
Each side will claim that they are serving the oppressed, while taking no action to actually do so in any meaningful way. There are some performative gestures that they will shout from the rooftops as evidence of how they work for the downtrodden.
When leaders in their religion are shown to be sexual predators, they will go into defense mode and blame the victims. If any admittance of wrongdoing happens, the predator is immediately forgiven and given "grace."
And then today, I was thinking about it in terms of the political compass:
I'm team existential crisis over there in green, if you were wondering.
Tell me about the green grass conspiracy in the comments! ;)
