WHAT DID I CROCHET?🧶 #26 | A Portable Bag Made with Acrylic Yarn

Hi, guys. It’s been a while. I planned on keeping up my posting streak but I guess I didn’t do that. If you noticed, most of my recent posts were small projects. I intentionally crocheted some of them so I’d have something to post. After my last post, I was stuck on what to make because I didn’t have anything to post. Finally, I made something, but I didn’t take process pictures so I thought I wouldn’t post it. However, today I decided to do it anyway, so here I am.

I picked up some balls of 100g 4-ply yarn at the store some months ago when I travelled and they’ve been sitting at home ever since. I bought them without knowing what exactly I wanted to make. After a while, I thought I’d make bags with them since they were a bit chunky and would be even chunkier doubled, so that evening when I was bored at home with all my devices off, I decided to finally do something with those yarns.

I had a screenshot of a bag on my phone that I could tell was made using the moss stitch and I liked the look of it so I decided to freehand a bag using the moss stitch.

I had four colours of the yarn — 2 balls of turquoise, 2 balls of forest green, and two shades of bright blue which I mistakenly picked because I wanted to get the same shade, one of them in particular. I decided to go with the forest green because I liked it better than the turquoise for the bag and I wasn’t sure the blue I liked better would be enough.

I wanted to work the bag in the round so I began with an oval bag bottom. By the way, I doubled the yarn by using the two balls at the same time and I used a 4mm hook size.

I didn’t want the bag to be big, just something portable. It was evening when I started and by the time it was beginning to get dark, I had finished the body and had started on the strap. I made reductions on the last 2 rows to make the shape a bit curved at the top before I began crocheting the straps.

I crocheted the strap by starting a few stitches from the sides then I reduced in a few rows till it was thin enough and then increased for a few rows again.

I did half of the strap, completing it the next morning. Then, I single crocheted round each side of the opening to make it neater.

To complete the bag, I went looking for my last handmade tag and sewed it to the bottom right of the body with green thread. My bag was finally ready!

When I showed my neighbours telling her that I was bored so I made the bag, she stared at me, just a little short of awestruck. 😅I guess not everyone can say that they were bored so they whipped up something that pretty.


I had to use a lighter to burn the fuzz of the yarn to make it neater. 🤦🏽‍♀️Yeah, acrylic yarn. I was so happy that it turned out looking this pretty because I didn’t think about using acrylic yarn to make nice bags before. I only had my eyes on paracord and T-shirt yarn that I have still not got my hands on. Anyways, after the oroject, this was the amount of yarn I had left.

I took the bag to church the next day and my friends gushed over it. They’d seen it on my WhatsApp status and spotted it as soon as they saw me.
