Board Skimming
What is a skim board, you might ask? It is a thin plywood board usually oval shaped with a slightly upturned pointed nose and a flat tail. The top has non-slip tape and the bottom smooth for minimum drag.
The action of board skimming is accomplished by throwing the board in front of you onto a thin film of water, usually on the beach sand at the water’s edge. Then you have to run at it and jump onto it; your momentum will then propel you and the board forward causing it to plane on the water’s surface.
Usually the best conditions are at low tide and you can see my grandson Joshua performing on this video. This is a sport that any youngster can do and the advantage of it is that you don’t need to spend an arm and a leg on buying any expensive equipment. It can keep them occupied for hours and it is very good exercise and great fun!
