San Damiano Cross

Originally, the cross hanging in the center of this place is an imitation. The original is in the Basilica of Saint Clare moved from here. It is the famous THE SAN DAMIANO CROSS. It is not the image of Jesus who died painfully, but the glory of Jesus. It doesn't matter if it's real or fake. Even an imitation, this cross in the center here seems more valuable and powerful than the one in the Basilica of Saint Clare. Glory is revealed and stood out more in low and humble places.

We regard suffering and pains as bad things and try to avoid or escape, but the meaning of the cross must be undertood as the symbol of path to achieve spiritual growth by overcoming them. Christ is icon of acheiver.

Pay attention to the magnified portion of the Damiano cross in the lower left corner in the center. The witness looks like Buddha. It's joke! But Buddha says Four Noble truth as the first, all beings experience pain and misery (dukkha) during their lifetime.
